New crib safety standards are on their way in the U.S. and worldwide. The new standards are expected to ban the manufacture of drop-side cribs due to problems with hardware and mis-assembly that can lead to injuries or death when the drop side detaches and creates a gap between the mattress and crib. Many crib manufacturers have already started phasing drop-side cribs out of their lines, and some retailers, such as Toys R Us, have stopped ordering them to sell in stores.

According to the Associated Press, CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said the agency has not moved as fast as it should have on new crib safety standards, but “the commission will write regulations in the next few months.” She indicated that drop-side cribs would not be allowed in the new standards.

ASTM, the group that creates worldwide voluntary safety standards, is also expected to release new crib safety standards very soon. ASTM’s Len Morrissey told Canada.com that the group’s latest crib safety standard “no longer contains provisions that allow movable side rails on full-sized cribs.”

If you have the space, a well-stocked changing station will help make diaper duty go more smoothly by giving you a place to keep diapers and other essentials close at hand. But because your baby is off the floor, it has its hazards.

Each year an estimated 3,000 babies, on average, are injured in changing table accidents. Some injuries are fatal. In no more time than it takes to turn for a diaper or wipe, an active baby can roll over and tumble to the ground. For a child, a fall from a changing table is like an adult plunging from several stories and could be fatal.

While changing tables with barriers on the two opposing long sides of the top comply with the ASTM International standard if they have a contoured changing pad, we recommend using a table with barriers on all four sides. Whether you use a table with barriers on two, three, or four sides, or you use a contoured pad on top of a dresser, prevent accidents by always using the safety straps on your changing table or pad. Never leave your baby unattended—even for a moment, even if you’re using the safety straps, and even if you’re sure your baby is secure. (See more changing table features.)

In fact, make it a practice to keep one hand on your baby. When you are shopping for a changing table, make sure that the drawers and shelves are easily accessible so you won’t have to let go of your baby to reach something.

Before changing your baby’s diaper, be sure that any products you need—diapers, wipes, or the wipe warmer—are within arm’s reach but not within your baby’s range, and place the diaper pail adjacent to the table. If you run out of diapers or forget your little one’s outfit, carry her with you while you get what you need. If you wheel your changing table from room to room, be sure to lock the wheels on a stable, flat surface. Park your changing table away from small objects your baby can grasp and hot objects, such as a radiator. Never wheel the table with your baby on it, strapped on or not.

What inspired you to create this project?
I found this really cute wrapping  paper at the grocery store and thought it would be great as framed art! Lucky for me I had an old frame just waiting for a project!

Please share with us step by step, detailed instructions.
The wooden frame was a cast-off from someone else and contained a very uninteresting poster. I opened up the frame from the back, and removed the poster which had been mounted to the bristol board (it was old enough that the poster peeled right off). I then cut a piece of wrapping paper about 2 inches smaller all around than the size of the frame opening, attached the wrapping paper to the bristol board with a few pieces of double-sided tape (a glue stick would work too), reinserted it into the frame and voila!

An even easier version of this project would be to use a frame with a pre-cut matte,such that you don’t have to worry about an exact cutting job — the matte covers the edges! Or simply cut a piece of wrapping paper to fit within the entire size of the frame with no border. And if you don’t have any frames on hand, so simply and neatly wrap a piece of your cute wrapping paper around a rectangle or square of cardboard, attach a ribbon and hang.

If you’re a parent who purchased a Baby Einstein DVD anytime from mid-2004 to last month, then you could get a refund from Disney. This move comes after a class-action lawsuit was threatened against Disney for making unproven claims about the educational merit of the DVDs.

I’m totally fine with Disney offering these refunds and I think that every parent who wants to should participate without even a glimmer of guilt. And though some groups feel that government entities should be involved in recalling the DVDs or there’s cause for a class-action lawsuit, I think that’s taking it a bit far. I was happy to see the overblown labels and claims removed from the DVDs, though, and am glad the company made those changes in marketing on their own even if it may have been to avoid a larger investigation and possible federal enforcement (see Federal Trade Commission letter .pdf to the company in 2007).

Still, we’re adults and we’re capable of making decisions about what our kids see on television. I can’t imagine there are many parents who are honestly disappointed that their baby or toddler isn’t some sort of genius after watching these DVDs. If there are, then the issues there are probably much bigger than anything a class action lawsuit can solve, I’m afraid.

The best way to increase your baby or toddler’s intelligence isn’t through anything they will see on a screen. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children don’t even watch television for a minute until they are 2 years old (though I think that’s a bit on the extreme side, too.) If you really want to make your child smarter, however, there are a lot of other things that you can do:

• Talk to him
• Read to him
• Hold him
• Love him
• Feed him well
• Sing and make music with him

But don’t, whatever you do, sit him down in front of the TV in hopes of boosting his brain power and if you do allow television in your home, make sure you’re also doing lots of other things to make sure your child is stimulated.

Right now only folks located in North America are eligible for these refunds or exchanges, but there are efforts to get the program going in other countries like Britain where the DVDs were sold as well. If you are interested in obtaining an exchange, coupon or refund of your Baby Einstein DVD, fill out the form located on the Baby Einstein Web site. You can do this up to four times per household. And once you’ve got the DVDs out of the house, sit down with your little one, relax, and read a good book.
